Phil.....The GM by: Phillip Jones

Let me first let this be known: I am NOT a Bears fan. So these opinions and observations are not of a "fan's" point of view; rather a more objectionable view. I just figure that since I am currently living in the area, I am more "in tune" to write about them. After watching the debacle called the 2007-08 season, these are low-cose moves that I believe the front office should take a look at.......

QB. Rex Grossman just signed a one-year contract. Its pretty obvious that he is going to enter training camp as the #1 quarterback. And he is not as bad as you think he is! Kyle Orton is probably your back-up. Brian Griese is a free-agent. I say, why not take a chance at a Drew Henson; a young quarterback (in football yrs), with alot of potential upside. What is there to lose?

RB. As my family and friends know, I believe Cedric Benson is a waste of an athletic body. Never have I seen a running back "look for a place to fall"; which its apparent to me that he does. Consider him a bust. The dream replacement would be Marion Barber, but I seriously doubt that Dallas will let him go. Deshaun Foster was recently released. I think he would fit in great. Derrick Ward would require some reimburstment for the Giants. But the asking price my not be TOO steep due to their depth. Other notable options include TJ Duckett, Julius Jones, and LaBrandon Toefield. If you have never heard of Toefield, dont be surprised. Most havent; he has been in that log-jam called the Jacksonville Jaguars backfield. Trust me, even this guy is an UPRADE to Benson.

WR. What a mess. The top two receivers from a year ago are gone. (Berrian can still be resigned however). I suggest that they do that, because this year's crop of free agents is below-average....AT BEST. But here are a couple guys that I think can be servicable: Keary Colbert, Doug Gabriel, DJ Hackett, and Justin Gage. I dont think that anyone on this list is a number one receiver, but they are all better then what is currently on the roster.  And they shouldnt cost too much.

* Just leave Devin Hester as the slot receiver and run him straight up the field

OL. The replace the whole unit (with the exception of the Olin Kruetz, everyone else needs to go!) No, seriously!

DL. Leave the front four alone. This is the second best front four in the league. (behind the New York Giants)

LB. Lance Briggs will be missed alot more then people believe. He kept Brian Urlacher from being exposed because he was willing to do the dirty work. With father time finally catching up with Urlacher, it was nice to have a "scapegoat" in the form of Briggs. With Briggs gone, here are a list of not so expensive replacements: Demorrio Williams, Danny Clark, Na'il Diggs,  and LeMar Marshall. None is a household name, but all can find the ball and make a play; something that should let Urlacher be Urlacher. Jemar Williams (the current backup) is very servicable though.

DB. RELEASE ADAM ARCHULETA. I know I am supposed to be talking about free agents, but this just had to be said. I think Daniel Manning is very overrated.....and that is saying something because he is not highly regarded. I think a great upgrade at the Free Safety position would be Madieu Williams. Dismiss the fact he played in Cincinnati; he is a speedy safety who can actually cover; something that I think Chicago dearly lacked in the defensive backfield.

Once again, these are just some moves that "Phil, the GM" would think about. Of course, some of these needs can be met in the draft. I just believe that the players I have listed deserve at least a look from the Bears, and they wont cost an arm and a leg!
