Redskins Preseason is in the air

Ah, the preseason, the time of year that aspiring undrafted and late-round rookies hope to make a team.  How often does this happen?  More NOT often than not, undrafted rookies have a smaller chance at making the team than Dan Snyder does at having the economy problem affect him.  Yes I know, Stephon Heyer made the team as an undrafted rookie from Maryland.  He was the only Redskins exception in who knows how many years.  Haha, yea I know I'm a freakin blogger and I should know when right? WRONG!  My job is not to throw numbers out there, its to write what I think, and what I gather talking to the real fan on the streets.

Tony Kornheiser, Michael Wilbon, Mike Wise, Jason La Conforna, blah blah blah.  These guys are bigtime, they have been disconnected from the real fans for so long they are thinking hollywood.  By that I mean that they are not speaking for the true redskins fan, because they haven't talked to one in a long time.  They are writing and talking for the sake of writing, talking, and cha ching!  I'm out there everyday talking to Joe the Redskins fan, and gathering all the info I can and going on here at night and blah blah blogging about it.

Sigh si sigh sigh sigh.  So, my blog is gonna be a combination between what I think, what I know, and what the average Redskins fan thinks and knows.  Got a problem with that?  Then click the little house at the top of your page.  Blast

Ok, there have been so many players on the redskins throughout the years in the preseason that I was sold on.

Mike Espy: Wide Receiver

Marcus Mason: Running Back

Stephon Heyer: OL

ETC.

We cut two out of three, the one we kept ended up being pretty good.  The two things I gotta give the skins (mostly when Gibbs was there) is their decisions on late-round or undrafted players.  Anthony Montgomery, Kedric Golston, Stephon Heyer, Kareem Moore (who I think will kick some you know what this year), and the best Chris Horton.  Defensively we have always done great through the draft, and haven't been too bad in free agency (besides Archuleta, Deion, bruce smith, mark carrier, etc).  The last few years have been much better, we have built a top 10 defense through the draft.  Why can't they build the offense that way?  I'll tell you why

For some odd reason Dan Spider and Vin Dieseldorf have to go sexy.  Sean Taylor might have been the best pick ever, he was the most dominate player i've seen at any position in my lifetime.  Every receiver was terrified to go anywhere near him, and he was gonna be the best player in history at his position.  Laron Landry is great, but he was the sexiest pick at that number that year.  Don't get me wrong, it was the right pick now, but we passed on so many great players in so many drafts because they weren't "sexy."

I don't like the whole "Best available player" plan.  So, you pick a Peyton Manning in 1998 when you have a Brett Favre in his prime?  Of course not.  You pick a Marvin Harrison when you have a Peyton Manning, thats how you build a championship team.  If you are already set at one position you figure out how to improve the team.  Have a great quarterback?  Draft a running back for him to hand off to, or a receiver to throw the ball too.  Have a great quarterback, receiver, and running back?  Guess what, draft offensive lineman to protect the quarterback, and make holes for the running back.  Have all of that?  Draft a freakin tight end, it isn't that hard.  I know the players don't turn out to be great most of the time, and its hard to find a great player.  But, draft in needs and not in best player and there won't be any problems.

Players in the NFL feed off of confidence.  Give them reassurance they are the guy, and they will perform greatly.  Sign another guy at their position and you get their confidence knocked down a peg or two.

My suggestion this year?  Draft lineman first, then a running back, then explore kickers and punters in the undrafted part of things (our kickers suck!).  Since we only have 4 picks, we might as well just e-mail our picks to the NFL.  I feel like the guy that goes to lunch and orders an appetizer because he doesn't have enough to afford a whole entree.  According to me and the hundreds of fans i've talked to, Spider and Diesldorf are going in the wrong direction.

Brennan for 2010!
