Ok, I know it's been awhile since I've posted, but I've been asked about the draft, and I decided to break the silence and post an entry.
I haven't posted in awhile because of my disgust of where the franchise was going, and how angry me and the rest of the fans have been with the organization. The hiring of Bruce Allen and Mike Shanahan, and firing of Vin Dieseldorf have provided some hope though. The fact that The Danny might be taking a step back from involvement has made us all a little less angry.
So, with that said lets talk about the next step for the Redskins, the draft. Free agency is obviously gonna be rough this year without a new CBA agreement reached. Which basically means all the unrestricted free-agents will now be restricted free-agents. Here is what I think we should do with free-agency and the draft.
Jason Campbell: Keep him. JC was a top 15 QB with the worst OL in football and almost the worst RB core in football (they ranked 28th in rushing). I know Shamahan will draft "his" guy at QB, and he will need some time to learn, so JC can be the stopgap.
Carlos Rogers, Antwaan randle-el, Rock Cartwright, Randy Thomas, Clinton Portis, Ladell Betts, Todd Collins, and Fred Smoot need to go. Rogers is a bust, El is a bust, Thomas needs to retire, Rock is worthless, CP is past his prime, Betts never has a prime, Collins should retire, and Smoot is a nickelback at best. It's time to give the young guys a shot, and not pay so much for overrated talent.
With that said lets address who we should add via free-agency, and my mock draft for this coming year.
It's a tough year for free-agency with the CBA agreement going to hell, but it's possible to add a couple of players. The only set starters along the OL are Casey Rabach and Derick Dockery, the rest of the line is up in the air. All we really have right now is a bunch of role players and moderate depth. Same goes for the RB position. The league has turned into a speed and youth first league. If we are to keep up with every other team, we need to add the same. Names like Marko Mitchell and Anthony Aldridge come to mind. This year's free-agency class is thin at best for Lineman. I only have 2 on my board.
Eugene Amano from Tennessee and Mike Brisiel from Houston, and they aren't really starter material.
Here is my mock draft for the skins this year, starting with who they will take in the first round, followed up with who I think they should take in the rest of the rounds.
Round 1- Sam Bradford - QB Oklahoma - The Redskins employ Dr. James Andrews who is Bradford's Doctor, if he is sold on his shoulder he will be our first pick.
Round 2 - Kyle Wilson - CB/KR Boise State - Kyle fills two gaping holes for the Skins as we need help in the return game as well as the secondary. This pick could also be Javier Arenas - CB/KR Alabama.
Round 3 - Forfeited for Jeremy Jarmon - DE last year
Round 4 - Toby Gerhart - RB Stanford - We need help at RB, and Shanahan is famous for finding first-round talent in the later rounds at the position. Gerhart is projected as a 3rd or 4th round pick, and could be a short-yardage back like Bettis was.
Round 5 - Roger Saffold - OL Indiana - He fits the mold and has the talent for Shanahan to mold him in to a solid starter.
Round 6 - Sean Lee - ILB Penn State - We are gonna need some good linebackers when we switch to the 3-4, Lee could be a late-round blossom we pick up to help us with the transition.
Round 7 - Michael Tepper - OL Cal - Michael is another player that could be a great player with the right scheme and coaching, and I think he would thrive in Shanahan's zone scheme.
We aren't going to have the splash we usually do in free-agency this year simply because it's not possible this year, but if we follow a good draft plan we could end up being very successful. My picks address what we need, and these players convince me that they will be important pieces of what could be a playoff contending team the next couple of years.
